The apartment makerspace was a project I was fortunate to play a part of when I took 2.739J, a product design course at MIT that is offered to mechanical engineers, business students at Sloan, Harvard students, and Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) students. The idea was to provide a compact, sturdy workbench for small spaces like city apartments. Our final prototype was quite polished, and I was proud to contribute to a group that worked so well together. We even filed a provisional patent on it! My role was mainly in CAD (I designed all of it while getting my groupmates’ feedback) and manufacturing, but I also played a role in collecting customer feedback and writing the patent.

Motivation

Our motivation stemmed mainly from the group members as well as some people that we knew outside of the class. Most of us (even the Sloanies) were maker-inclined but lived in small apartments in the city. Honestly, most of the motivation came from our customer feedback, and this class was essentially defined by a constant pursuit of customer feedback. Estimations of market value of any idea are generally overestimated, and while we still did them, it was heartening to see that our project could potentially fill a need. Of course, pricing and considering competitive alteratives was also important.

Sketches

The product design process (as with most projects) started with sketches, and most everyone came up with ideas. Our final product prototype would contain features from several of these ideas. Nevertheless, in doing these sketches alongside collecting feedback from customers, we were able to hone in on the features that we wanted our workbench to have.

Features, Design, and Renders

In the end, our final product had a handful of key features, which can be seen in the renders below. First, the workbench we built had interchangeable table top surfaces that would be fully seated into a magnetic cavity. Some example surfaces were measurement and ruler grids, a whiteboard, and an anti-static rubber surface for soldering. These surfaces could be swapped out and stored on the left leg of the workbench. Another feature was a built-in trash slot, the lid of which was flush with the interchangeable surfaces and could be lifted to allow for brushing the trash from the workbench surface into the slot. Lastly, while we didn’t built them, we also intended for the workbench to come with roll-out cabinets for storage that also served as seating. These cabinets were designed to be built from sheet-bent metal, similar to IKEA furniture. Overall, this whole workbench was built so that it could be compactly fit (disassembled) into a rectangular box for convenient shipping.

Manufacturing

The manufacturing was split between a couple of members in the group, and there were several “rough drafts” and proof-of-concept builds that we could give to potential users for more customer feedback. Our prototypes were made from MDF and plywood using a variety of woodworking tools. The trash slot had a chamfer that facilitated disposal of trash from the interchangeable surfaces, so the workbench table top (and the boards with cavities for different surfaces) had to be made on a large CNC router.

Customer Testing

As I mentioned before, this class was run to be a constant pursuit of customer feedback. We collected feedback for every stage: the idea conception, the product specifications, the sketches, the proof-of-concept models, the first prototype, and the final prototype. Our final product was even driven to RISD and left out in a lounge. It was tried out by more than 30 students! Below are some pictures and videos showing our rough and final prototypes in action.
